Let the Games Begin
It occurs to me that I may need help sorting through my newfound quandaries. Help looking for a new place to live in my super expensive neighborhood for one single girl and one single cat (no pets is not an option). Help figuring out whatâs going on with my job. Why am I having so much trouble plotting Goldilocksâ future? Will I remain the co-artistic director if we merge with the bug people? And then thereâs my after-work life: Whatâs up with my sudden rise in demand among males? Is one of them too old? Too young? Just right? Is there such a thing as just right, or is it time to transform this fairy tale all together?
Since I think it would take way too long to explain this situation to a therapist, I gather my best friend Susan and our pal Miralise Silva-Abramowitz before work at the café. Itâs time for me to kiss (though Iâve already done this part) and tell.
âThree guys,â Susan says. âThis gets better and better.â
âWhat about my impending homelessness and joblessness problems?â I ask them.
âGeez, not before coffee,â Miralise says.
âNot before dinner and drinks,â Susan says.
âSpeaking of dinner and drinks, and three guys to kiss â¦â starts Miralise.
âI didnât mean to kiss Ben, exactââ I say. I can barely keep the âexactlyâ in.
âBen?â Miralise questions.
âThe young mechanic,â Susan reminds her. âKeep up.â
âPlease,â Miralise says. âI have three students named Benjamin. I keep seeing six-year-olds.â
âNo, heâs in his twenties,â I say.
âI like that about him,â Susan says, running her spoon through her latte suggestively, if you can do that.
âOkay, letâs start with last nightâs guy,â Miralise suggests. âYouâre becoming so Cosmo. Different guy every night.â
âIt was a date with a guy recommended by my aunt, and it was not the whole night, thank you very much,â I say. âIs Cosmo even still around?â
They both shrug. âI think we aged out of Cosmo once we hit sixteen,â Susan says.
âI never aged into Cosmo,â I say.
âNo one really does,â Miralise adds. âProbably why we donât even know if itâs around anymore.â
âSo, the den-tist,â Susan says, enunciating precisely.
âYou guys are such snobs,â Miralise says. âDentist is good. Dentist means vacation time and, well, dental coverage, like for life.â
âDentists poke people with sharp painful instruments,â I say.
âNot intentionally,â Miralise says. âSo, dinner.â
âWith Jeremy and my aunt,â I say. âThis following coffee with Jeremy and my aunt not so long ago.â
âThatâs sweet. Whenâs the last time I met a guy who would bring my aunt along on a date?â Miralise says.
We stare at her, wondering when, too.
âOh. Never,â she says. âSo, heâs thoughtful,â Miralise says. âWhat do you want, obnoxious and uncaring.â
âShe married that one,â Susan reminds us all unnecessarily.
âJust because itâs what youâre used to â¦â Miralise says.
âTrue,â I say, finishing her elliptical thought in my mind.
âMaybe you donât recognize nice as the good thing it is,â she says. âMaybe youâre hung up on looking for the wrong thing.â
Looking for the right thing/person/chair/planet. Iâm reminded of Goldilocks.
